Sonia Carrasco is the founder of sustainable fashion brand Sonia Carrasco®. Before launching her own brand she was a designer at Alexander McQueen and Céline. We sat down with her to learn about her interest in female empowerment and sustainability. She quickly showed her passion and entrepreneurial drive.
Where did your creativity start?
I have always been creative. When I was a child, I loved to draw, and I even created my first imaginary collections. During my time at university, and later working at Alexander McQueen and Céline, I was able to develop and express my creativity.
What do you love most about fashion, and why did you study fashion?
I love the fact that you can imagine something and make it a reality. The process of experimentation and craftsmanship during the creative process is so exciting for me and is one of the things I enjoy the most. I always knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer and, in order to achieve my dream, I had to study fashion.
Where did your interest in sustainability start?
I became increasingly aware of the damage that humanity is doing to the environment and, in my everyday life, I was trying to be more conscientious with how my actions impacted the environment in order to make changes to my lifestyle. For me, it didn’t make sense to create a brand without sustainable values.
When did you launch Sonia Carrasco®, and how is Sonia Carrasco® unique from other brands?
We launched the brand with the release of the first collection in January of this year.
We are not just another sustainable brand. We embrace a contemporary minimalistic style that is elegant and feminine without neglecting comfort. The brand values fabric quality and commitment to sustainability in every step of the creative process, demonstrating with a radical
transparency that fashion can be done without polluting the environment. Our proposal is based more on personality than conveying a certain brand image, and all of this is what makes us unique.
What are your sustainability goals?
We are declaring sustainability values by creating a community that is called “Fashion for the Future,” which is a platform to promote social and environmental values and share knowledge of sustainable practices in the fashion industry to stop harming the world. We are in the process of developing this platform, and I have great hopes for this project.
What is the largest challenge you have faced launching Sonia Carrasco®? How did you overcome that challenge?
The biggest challenge has been finding suppliers who have good quality fabrics, who are also truly sustainable. I had to do a lot of research to make sure that the suppliers match with our values.
What advice would you give to other creative women?
I would say that, if you are a ambitious enough, you can succeed despite being a woman in a male dominated world.
What is your favorite Sonia Carrasco® product, and why?
My favorite piece is the 100% organic cotton t-shirt with the slogan: “Your Fashion is killing my World.” This item promotes our brand’s values as well as being a timeless garment.
What does it mean for you to be powerful?
Powerful is someone who has the tools and ability to join the concrete forces to fight for universal rights and values.
